Presto card is one of the necessities of life for people living in Toronto. Recharge machines are everywhere in this city, so it is very convenient for people to recharge their cards. However, not everybody can see the screen or read the words. Today when I load my Presto card, I suddenly find out that there is an audio jack below the screen. I was so curious about it so I insert my earphone and see what would happen. At the moment I insert my earphone, the screen suddenly turns into another mode. From the earphone, I can hear the instructions about how to use this machine. Following the instructions, people can press the number on the pin pad to choose the language and the service they need. The instruction will also tell people where the pin pad is.

After I chose English by press 1 and then chose “Load/Check Presto Card” by press 1, the screen shows a new page, and the sound in my earphone also gives me new instructions. The new page asks whether to keep the screen private or not. If one presses 1, the page will turn into a normal page about loading value. If one presses 2, then the page will be locked and set as private. This is a very accessible design since it can protect the personal information of those people who couldn’t see. All the steps have detail sound instructions and could be done on the pin pad, which provides much convenience for people who may have difficulty to do this thing. This design makes the machine suitable for almost all people. This is a really amazing design of accessibility.
